That seemingly rarest of all housing assistance, Section 8, is being made available for a short time! This is a NYC based and time sensitive opportunity.

The application will be available online at on.nyc.gov/section8-application from Monday, June 3, 2024, at 12:00 AM, through Sunday, June 9, 2024, at 11:59 PM. Section 8 – ACCESS NYC.

If you don’t live in New York City you can find out if vouchers are being made available near you here.

According to the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Section 8 provides housing vouchers to very low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled.

These vouchers help this group to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market. The vouchers are for those identified who are paying more than 30% of their income in rent. According to my source, about 15 billion dollars was received for this fund.

According to HUD, while the participant is free to choose any housing that meets the requirements of the program and is not limited to units located in subsidized housing projects, the specific housing offered in this instance is New York City Housing Authority or the projects.

I never benefitted from section 8. I never seemed to be able to secure a voucher. According to HUD, there are many more people who apply for the vouchers than who receive them.

However, I received other housing benefits. I lived in the projects with my parents and brothers for years. It was a step up from the building that we moved from which was falling apart around us.

Our project apartment building was brand new when we moved in, had 7 large closets (7 is not a typo), decent sized rooms, and enabled my parents to save enough money to eventually buy a home.

I moved from that project apartment with my 12 year old to my first apartment which was rent stabilized. I didn’t make much money for a long time, things were tight, but, I finally restarted my college career. The rent was not nothing but it was doable if I was careful.

By the grace of almighty God we made it. I believe that with meaningful work, just a little help, in my case rent stabilization, and a loving community, Mom, you can make it.

I hope you get the voucher,

xoxo Kimberly
