According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) 2023 Annual Homelessness Assessment Report (AHAR) to Congress more than half of all people experiencing homelessness in the USA were in just four states. New York State is one of them.
Clearly, homelessness is a growing problem all over the United States post pandemic, in expensive cities like NYC, this is especially true.

Depending on the indicator New York City is the 11th , 5th , or the most expensive by a factor of 3 (a source cites The Big Apple three times on the same list, so, yes, it’s costly to live here) city in the US.
However, I’m glad that, even in pricey NYC, renters may link up with affordable apartments through NYC Housing Connect.

Register for a NYC Housing Connect account if you want to enter the housing lottery for any of the apartments on the open lottery page.

Apply to Lotteries
Check often for new developments that fit your household. It may take several months for applications to be processed. You may want to apply to multiple lotteries for which you qualify. I would!
Selection and Eligibility Confirmation
- Wait for selection: Applications can take several months to process. You can expect to be informed about your application status within two to ten months after the lottery deadline.
- Confirm eligibility: If selected, you’ll need to confirm your eligibility and provide documents to show you qualify for the apartment.
Sign a Lease
If you are matched to a specific unit, at that point you may sign a lease.
PLEASE NOTE – What follows is not a complete list of available apartments. For a complete selection of available rentals and to apply to any apartment for which you believe you qualify, you must create an account and then log into the NYC Housing Connect portal to submit an application.
Convenient New York City Neighborhoods
There is definitely a certain beauty about living anywhere in NYC. All 5 boroughs have their own aesthetic, amenities, attitude and authenticity. You canNOT fake being a New Yorker.
One more thing – you canNOT fake the peace of mind of being able to pay the rent for a New York City apartment.
When I first moved to Harlem, it was the hot, trendy spot. If you’re unfamiliar, HarIem runs from about 110th Street up to about 155th street in Manhattan.
To be clear, this is not to say that we lived in the hot, trendy part of Harlem.
My daughter, who, previously, travelled at least an hour her entire school life, FINALLY had a walking commute when we moved.
Making life a little easier for her was another reason we relocated: convenience for her, and the affordable rent for me.
Deadlines: Approaching Fast and Furious
All of these lotteries have deadlines which quickly approach. Please apply promptly and completely.
And, for the last time, NYC Housing Connect is the only way to view the complete selection of properties currently available.
Look for moving boxes…
