Help! Love, MOM

Now there was in the citadel of Susa a Jew of the tribe of Benjamin, named Mordecai son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, ⁶ who had been carried into exile from Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, among those taken captive with Jehoiachin king of Judah.

 ⁷ Mordecai had a cousin named Hadassah, whom he had brought up because she had neither father nor mother. This young woman, who was also known as Esther, had a lovely figure and was beautiful. Mordecai had taken her as his own daughter when her father and mother died. Esther 2:5-7

The book of Esther in the bible is one in which the sovereignty and providence of God are on resplendent, yet hidden display.

The Book of Esther is, on one level, the story of a young Jewish orphan named Esther, who, through God’s sovereignty is:

• adopted by her cousin Mordecai,
• loved as a daughter, and then
• crowned Queen of Persia by King Ahasuerus,
• and, along with Mordecai, her adopted dad, saves the Jews in Persia from execution from their wicked enemy, Haman.

But, before Esther was Ahasuerus’s Queen she was Mordecai’s Princess.

Thank God for love that will find us, feed us and father us, find the right kindergarten for us, fund our slumber parties, pay for piano lessons and Princeton; pray for and with us, showering us with tender, patient, parental love.

What the Mosaic Law required was:

• Provide a minimum of care to the “fatherless” or orphans: Exodus 22:22-24
• Give orphans the same justice as any other person or be cursed: Deuteronomy 24:17; 27:19
• Provide economically for orphans: Deuteronomy 14:28-29; 24:19

ALL of these provisions are important especially for orphans who, by definition, would not have anyone to help them get justice, to provide for them and to cover them from abuse.

The bible suggests that Mordecai did all of these things. However,, Mordecai goes another step. He does what the law does not require.

He not only adopts Esther; he adopts her AND loves her like a daughter.

Long before Ahasuerus was swept away by Esther’s beauty, Mordecai, her adopted father, loved her dearly and protected Esther’s innocence.

It could be that part of the reason that Esther grew up to reign was because she was royally fathered by, Mordecai.

Being an orphan both then and now is one of the worst things that can happen to a child.

That God would so move in the life of an orphan on behalf of His people captivates my heart and causes hope to rise that the same God who moved back then is the same omnipotent God today.

The Sovereign God has brought me and you to the kingdom, as it were, for such a time as this. He does not change. and He knows what you need this at this very moment.

You and I can trust the Sovereign God. He will provide for and rescue you.
