In my last post, I wrote about what I believe is the first school shooting of this school year in America. That sad statistic played out on Saturday, August 15th, at my nephew’s school, Virginia State University.

I am grateful on at least two levels; first, that my nephew was spared any injury, and second, that the weekend also marked his parents’, my brother and sister-in-law’s, 22nd wedding anniversary.

A tragedy of this sort especially on their special day? Unthinkable.

Virginia State is an HBCU — one of 107 recognized historically Black colleges and universities in the country, and a well-regarded one, ranked 11th.

In the comments of a newsreel, someone wrote: “Nothing to see here. Just animals shooting animals.”

Racist foolishness: wrong-headed and undeserved.

It is also America.
